Duster Is A Show That Knows What The People Want
ALSO THIS WEEK: Poker Face (mostly) managed to navigate around one of my biggest pet peeves
The Five Spot is a weekly Friday roundup where I rank and riff on my five favorite things from the week. Most of the entries will be about film and TV, but there might also be ones about weird local news or sandwiches I ate or anything else, really. The opening section is free but the rest is an exclusive for paid subscribers, so if you want to read the top four entries, you can do that by upgrading…
Off we go.
FIVE: Reasons to watch Duster, ranked
Drumroll, please…
10. Duster is a new HBO Max series from JJ Abrams about a wheelman (Josh Holloway) who turns on his crime lord boss and teams up with a loose cannon rookie FBI agent (Rachel Hilson) to take him down, which is all I have ever asked for from a television show
9. It is set in the 1970s and has excellent era-appropriate vibes, including but not limited to: hair, music, and shirts with collars wider than the Mississippi River
8. The show is called Duster because the main character, Jimmy, drives a Plymouth Duster while on the job, but it’s a lot of fun to just pretend the character himself is named Duster, too
7. The actual tagline for this sucker is as follows: “All vengeance, no brakes”
6. Hell yeah
5. The first few episodes are absolutely littered with Dudes You Know, from Corbin Bersen to Donal Logue to the guy who played Cheddar Bob in 8 Mile, which is fun if you like pointing at the television and shouting “OH SHIT IT’S THAT GUY,” which I very much do
4. Buddy, you know we have car chases
3. And lots of attractive people staring at each with lust in their eyes while saying incredibly cool things to each other
2. I’ve seen the first few episodes and I still don’t know if the show is going to be “good,” but I do know I’m enjoying it a lot for what it is, which is a whipass summer show I am excited to watch on Friday nights
1. Keith David plays the crime lord in this show and I really cannot possibly stress in strong enough terms how cool he looks and acts every time he is on screen
It’s hot outside. Let’s watch Duster.
FOUR: Leave Pierce Brosnan and his accent alone
