Here is the fireworks scene from The Sandlot. I am posting it today for three primary reasons;
Today is July 4th and that is a good day to post it
It is my favorite scene from my favorite movie
It is a good reminder to just, like, enjoy some fireworks this weekend
One of my core beliefs in life is that you have to take a moment to recognize when something cool is happening and try to appreciate it, even when it’s something small, and even when a lot of less cool stuff is going on out there. Being an adult is hard, man. You’ve got bills and responsibilities and you’re expected to have very strong opinions about a bunch of idiots in suits. It’s okay to stop every now and then and shut all that out and just enjoy something for what it is.
For me, one of those things is fireworks. I love looking in the sky and seeing colorful stuff explode and going “oooo” and “ahhhh” and “LOOK AT THAT ONE” even though I’m old enough to have logged onto the internet through a phone line. I have a great view of my town’s local ones from the little patio outside my apartment. I’ll be out there tonight watching stuff go boom. It’s one of my favorite nights of the year.
Maybe fireworks aren’t your thing. Maybe your thing is something else entirely. Or maybe fireworks are your thing, too, but this message is feeling a little too sappy and sentimental for you. That’s okay. You can always disregard everything I said up to this point and just remember the time in 2012 when San Diego accidentally ran through its entire fireworks display in a chaotic 30-second spree of light and sound. That was cool, too.
In conclusion:
Fireworks are awesome
Ray Charles rules
I would pay extra to go to a fireworks show where they set them all off at once
Have a good weekend.
I was in San Diego at those fireworks, but not at this spot. There were multiple barges across the bay set to go off, all synced together and to music. We were by Seaport Village where people had camped out all day. Cookouts and family time. We stroll up about 5 minutes before the fireworks are set to go off when the sky lights up. It was the most exciting fireworks display I've ever witnessed. Obviously. But we did hear some grumbling from people who'd been there the whole day waiting. Insane! Every fireworks I see now pales in comparison.
I went to the Phillies fireworks show the other day and the sandlot scene was exactly what I was thinking about as America the beautiful played over the fireworks going off.
